Creative Wedding Table Runners

chalkboard style table runner

Table runners are often overlooked when it comes to wedding decor, but they often help frame your floral centerpieces and organize your space.  Sure, you could just throw down a plain fabric runner. And while that would be fine, your tables would miss out on all the pizazz these creative table runners bring to your own reception.

For more modern reception, this chalkboard paper runner (above) allows for a fun way for you to communicate with your guests. Write anything from place cards to the menu or even just a greeting.

Of course, this year has been all about metallic glam. And nowhere is that quite so fantastic than with a sequined table runner.  I love the gold and cream chevron pattern above, especially with the brighter glittery accents on the table.  Below, a metallic sequined runner is the perfect way to set off a white tablecloth and bright sherbet-colored flowers. As you can see with this example, the runner brings the whole look together.

Of course, you can always just make your “runner” out of greenery and flowers. This table (below) features leaves and flowers woven along the table with candlesticks in the center. This creates a gorgeous, lush atmosphere–great for the bride who wants a garden wedding, but can’t find the right garden.

Bolder brides will love all of the fun experimenting you can do with texture, pattern, and color. Above, this complex design involves lots of black and white pattern-on-pattern playfulness.  Below, rather than the usual runner, this bride opted to use shapes cut from colored leather. It gave this rustic wedding a decidedly modern edge.

If you prefer vintage or shabby chic, try different doily-inspired lace runners until you find the right pattern or scale you’re looking for. Above, this open, circular pattern allows the beautiful wood table to shine through. A more densely patterned lace runner (below, left) looks great with votives and flowers, creating a very romantic tablescape. For a crafty, shabby-chic vibe, dress up the usual burlap runner with ribbons and bias tape in your color palette (below, right).

And don’t forget to incorporate less traditional materials. This loose, netted table runner below draws attention to the lavish pink flower centerpieces by just giving a little extra texture to the tablescape. If you wanted this type of runner to move more to the forefront, pick a netting in a darker shade than the table.
